Prophecy
is the prediction of future events or the speaking of divine words through
chosen human messengers (Prophets). Throughout history, people have sought knowledge of future events from special individuals or groups who were thought to have the gift of prophecy, such as Oracles at Delphi in ancient Greece. Cultures in which prophecy played an important role include the Persians, Assyrians, Celts, Chaldeans, Chinese, Druids, Egyptians, Greeks, Hebrews, Indians, indigenous North Americans, Mayans, Tibetans, and many in the Christian and Muslim traditions, among others. Many prophecies can be vague, which makes it very easy to be applied to many different future events. Sarah always cautions us in believing any prophecy that is not detailed giving you a place, name and date of event. Also, the longer a prophecy exists, the greater chance that it will change from person to person, creating an entirely different perspective of what the prophecy originally stated. The Maya Calendar For example, lets look a the Maya calendar, primarily for the year 2012. Many have spoken of the year 2012 as being the end of the world as predicted by the Mayan's. This is, in fact, not true. According to Mayan beliefs, it is a time of re-birth. Again, lets look at the fact that this prediction is very vague, to many a re-birth can mean the ending of what one knows. To understand this prediction we must look back in time and understand the meaning behind the word re-birth in Mayan times. To do this we look to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the Quiché Maya of the colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fifth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first four creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fifth world where men were placed. It states that another creation will occur on December 20, 2012. Here we find the details that have been lost through the passing on of this prediction by word of mouth. Therefore, the prediction does not state that the end of the world will come on December 20, 2012. Instead, it states that a new world will be created and the beginning of this world will occur on December 20, 2012. Edgar Cayce Let's also take a look at a few of the predictions of Edgar Cayce. Cayce predicted that the year 1933 would be a good year, when in fact, it was one of the worst in the Great Depression. Another of his predictions stated that United States scientists would discover a "death ray" from Atlantis in 1958. The problem with some of his predictions that have believed to come true is that they are very vague and can be interpreted in many different ways. Again, these are only a few examples, but do keep in mind that unless a prophecy outlines in detail the events coming, typically it is wise to be open minded and not take the prediction to heart. |
