The oldest known paranormal research organization, The Ghost Club, was founded in London in 1862. Some of the more famous members of the team were Charles Dickens, Harry Price, Sir William Fletcher Barrett and Sir William Crookes. Many of the early paranormal investigators gathered for séances and counted the number of ghosts of people who were said to reappear spectrally on the anniversary of their death. The counting of the ghosts is known as the Census of Hallucinations. The term paranormal investigator has increasingly been used to refer to those who hunt ghosts and not those that investigate EVP (Electronic voice phenomena) and Psychokinesis. Although, this distinction is being made, it is generally known that many do investigate all areas of the phenomena. The use of Quija boards is unscientific and considered evil by many spiritualists that investigate the paranormal. It is important to note that when investigating the paranormal, certain permissions must be obtained in order to investigate certain properties. In the recent past many homes and buildings have been vandalized in order to allow for investigations. It is in these actions that many paranormal investigators have been kept from properly investigating areas of high paranormal activity. Such illegal activity does not make a person an investigator, it simply highlights the ignorance of the individual or individuals committing such acts. Ghost Hunting Tools Interviewing - The interview is one of the greatest tools an investigator can use. It allows for the collection of testimony from witnesses, information on the location to learn about the history of the area and information over the past events that may be the main cause of the haunting. Psychics - Sensitive individuals that can identify and make contact with spiritual entities. Cameras - Video and still imagery cameras used in an attempt to capture anomalous phenomena. Digital and video. Temperature Measurement - Used to detect cold spots believed to accompany paranormal activity. Infrared thermal imaging video cameras and hand-held infrared surface and ambient temperature sensors. Audio Recording - Used to capture disembodied voices of the departed, considered EVP. Dowsing - Using crystals and/or rods bent into an L-shape to indicate the presence of ghosts. Negative Ion detectors - to detect an excess of negative ions which some feel are associated with paranormal activity. Infrared motions sensors - to detect possible anomalous movement within a given area. Geiger counter - to measure fluctuations in radiation which some believe will point to a disturbance in spirit energy. EMF Meter - using electromagnetic field meters to detect possible unexplained magnetic fields which some attribute to the presence of ghosts and spirits. |
