The word astrology derives from two Greek words: astra, a star, and logos, logic or reason.  The study and use of astrology requires logic and reason to understand the relationship between mankind and the universe.  At one time there was no distinct difference made between astrology and astronomy, all who studied the subject were called astrologers.  With the creation of astrological computing software, mathematics has become less essential than it once, yet understood chart construction and the theory behind it is necessary for interpretation purposes.

Zodiac Signs

   The Zodiac is a circle of space in the sky that contains the orbits of the planets or the Sun's path called the ecliptic.  The Zodiac is divided into twelve parts, each part containing 30 degrees of space, making a total of 360 degrees.  Each of the twelve parts of the Zodiac represents a specific sun sign.  As a quote from the bible denotes, "Each star has its own glory," and many astrologers believe that each of the twelve signs has its own distinct qualities that are bestowed upon individuals according to their birth-date. 

   Esoteric students believe that your Sun sign in this life will be your ascending sign in your next life and your ascending sign in this life was your Sun sign in your previous life.  If your Sun sign and Ascendant are the same in this lifetime, it is said that you failed to complete your previous life's lessons fully and are meant to repeat your past life until you get it right.

Fate v. Free Will

   We often hear the term, "Free Will," used in connection with psychic, tarot and astrology readings.  It is important to know exactly what Free will is in order to understand its' use in these areas.  To do this we should examine the meanings of Destiny and Fate.  Destiny properly means "whatever is possible unto us," and fate means "the outward circumstances which appear in our pathway, to be manipulated and eventually overcome through effort and understanding."  In order to overcome our fate, if we choose to overcome it, we must first know what our fate is.  Astrology attempts to point us in the right direction to understand our fate, in order for us to use our Free will, so that we may choose to make changes in our life.
